Synopsis
Set in 1940s Australia, The New Boy is the story of a nine-year-old Aboriginal orphan boy who arrives in the dead of night at a remote monastery run by a renegade nun. The new boy’s presence disturbs the delicatelbalanced world in this story of spiritual struggle and the cost of survival.
Director’s biography
Warwick Thornton, born in 1970, is an Australian film director, screenwriter, and cinematographer. His debut feature film Samson and Delilah won the Caméra d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival in 2009and the award for Best Film at the Asia Pacific Screen Awards. He also won the Asia Pacific Screen Award for Best Film in 2017 forSweet Country. Virginia Trioli writes that Thornton’s work is “driven by his emotional and intellectual response to the historical dispossession and contemporary despair of his people”, using his films to tell stories with the minimum of dialogue.
