The inaugural Da Nang Asian Film Festival was a great success and was honored by the Sports and Culture newspaper of Vietnam News Agency as one of the 10 outstanding cultural events in 2023.
Following the success of the first Da Nang Asian Film Festival, the People’s Committee of Da Nang City continues to direct, with the Vietnam Film Development Association (VFDA) taking the lead, in coordination with the Department of Culture and Sports, the Department of Tourism of Da Nang City, UNIMedia Company, and other organizations, to host the second Da Nang Asian Film Festival (DANAFF II) from July 2nd to July 6th, 2024, in the coastal city of Da Nang.
DANAFF II aims to recognize exceptional cinematic works that are rich in humanity and showcase unique artistic expression. The festival also strives to promote and introduce valuable new cinematic works from Vietnamese cinema, the Asia-Pacific region, and selected films from around the world to a wider audience, while also celebrating new discoveries and talent.
The Film Festival will be attended by leaders of the Party, State, Central Committees, Ministries, and other governmental branches, as well as leaders of Da Nang City and provinces. Additionally, renowned artists, celebrities, and film experts from both Vietnam and abroad will also attend the festival.
The DANAFF II program will run for 5 days and feature special events and activities:
- The Opening Ceremony, which will take place in the evening of July 2, 2024, and the Closing Ceremony – Awarding Ceremony, set for the evening of July 6, 2024, will be broadcast live on Vietnam Television, Da Nang Television, Security TV, National Assembly Television, as well as on provincial and city television stations across the country. The events will also be available on various digital platforms;
- Contest categories include Asian films and Vietnamese films;
- The “Vietnamese Cinema Today” program;
- A special feature on French Cinema;
- A curated film selection by director and People’s Artist Dang Nhat Minh;
- The total number of participating films has increased to 63, up from 46 in DANAFF I;
- Workshops and Discussions:
- An exploration of Director Dang Nhat Minh’s writing style.
- The relationship between French cinema and Vietnamese cinema.
- Film production cooperation: international experiences and development solutions.
- Sharing experiences from coastal film festivals.
- The “Nurturing Incubator” workshop.
- Notably, for the first time in Vietnam, DANAFF II will present the Cinema Achievement Award to an outstanding filmmaker.
The Network for the Promotion of Asian Cinema/NETPAC is one of the international partners involved in coordinating the Da Nang Asian Film Festival.
JURY BOARD
The Chairman of the Jury for the Asian Film category is the renowned Chinese-French director and writer Dai Tu Kiet. The jury members include Georges Goldenstern, Former Director of CineFondation at Cannes Film Festival (France); Meriette Rissenbeek, Director of Berlin Film Festival (2019-2024) (Germany); actress Tran Nu Yen Khe; and young director Ha Le Diem.
In the Vietnamese Film category, the Chairman of the Jury is the renowned Hong Kong director Stanley Kwang. The Jury members include Producer Tran Thi Bich Ngoc, People’s Artist Le Khanh, Director Leon Quang Le, and Programmer and Director Lorna Tee, who also serves as the Secretary General of the Asian Film Alliance Network (AFAN).
The NETPAC Award is presided over by Mr. Jean-Marc Thérouanne, Co-Founder and Co-Director of the Vesoul Asian Film Festival (France). The jury also includes Dr. Mara Matta, Associate Professor at Sapienza University in Rome, Italy, and Dr. Phan Thi Bich Ha, Former Principal of Ho Chi Minh City University of Theater and Cinema and the Dean of the Faculty of Arts at Van Lang University.
OPENING CEREMONY, CLOSING AND AWARDING CEREMONY
The Opening and Closing Ceremony awarding ceremony will be aired live at 8:00 p.m. on July 2 and 6, 2024, on VTV, Da Nang TH Radio, Security TV, as well as on television stations of provinces and cities, and other digital platforms.
The Organizing Committee is working closely with UniMedia company to arrange two significant events: the Opening and Closing of DANAFF II. Mr. Tran Viet Bao Hoang is in charge of production, and the program director is Tran Vi My.
THE “TALENT INCUBATOR” WORKSHOP
The “Talent Incubator” workshop for the DANAFF 2024 season 2 will feature 2 classes.
Join our “Basic Acting” class led by instructor Lydia Park from Korea, and our “Advanced Acting” class led by renowned instructors Tsuyoshi Sugiyama from Japan, Phan Dang Di, and Nguyen Hoang Diep from Vietnam. This year, our “Advanced Acting” class will feature in-depth acting lessons with stage director Tsuyoshi Sugiyama, as well as special lessons on “on-set work experience” taught by director Phan Dang Di, and led by Nguyen Hoang Diep.
The “Talent Incubator” workshop, co-organized by DANAFF and Autumn Meeting, is attracting a large number of young people who are passionate about acting and aspire to pursue careers as professional actors. We have already received over 400 applications from aspiring actors for the basic acting class casting.
After holding two live casting sessions in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City, the panel aim to choose 16 Vietnamese students and 3 Korean students for the basic class.
The Advanced Acting class aims to enroll 20 students through the application process.
GALA MEETING FILMMAKERS, ARTISTS AND AUDIENCES
Artists and film crew participating in DANAFF II will meet and interact with the audience prior to the screening.
There are two movie screenings for the opening of the DANAFF II festival: the Opening French Film Program at 9:30 am on July 2, 2024, and the Opening Selected Works Program of director People’s Artist Dang Nhat Minh at 3:00 p.m. on July 2, 2024.
