Rahhat Shah Kazmi’s present day adaptation set in today’s time Bombay, based on Manto’s one of the most celebrated book “Bombay Stories; Set against the backdrop of 1930s Bombay, Bombay Stories follows three of Manto’s acclaimed stories Khusiya, Saugandhi and Bu, and an additional story which links all three stories, primarily focusing on sex workers, and underprivileged women in the society…. Through a narrative voice that blends realism, sharp satire, and magical realism, the film portrays the vulnerable inner worlds of those pushed to the margins of society. The work exposes the hypocrisy, exploitation, and deep-seated prejudices that society imposes upon women. Infused with a nostalgic and poetic atmosphere, Bombay Stories raises profound questions about human dignity, the yearning for freedom, and the fundamental right to exist.
Rahat Shah Kazmi is an Indian director, screenwriter, and producer renowned for exploring complex social issues, gender dynamics, and the human condition through a deeply literary lens. He first garnered international attention with Mantostaan (2017), which was showcased at numerous global film festivals. His acclaimed feature Lihaaf (2019), adapted from Ismat Chughtai’s celebrated short story, further solidified his dedication to addressing sensitive themes in contemporary South Asian society. Kazmi also directed the international co-production Country of Blind (2023), which was featured in the Oscars contention campaign. At DANAFF 2025, his Vietnam–India co-production Love in Vietnam was introduced to audiences as part of the Asian Cinema Panorama program.
