Mother Bhumi is set along the border between Malaysia and Thailand and centers on Hong Im, a widow living within an agricultural community where healing rituals and folk beliefs remain deeply woven into everyday life. When a government land acquisition project threatens to disrupt the peace of the valley, Hong Im gradually becomes a spiritual anchor for villagers facing the loss of their homeland. As the struggle unfolds, ancient rituals, collective memory, and spiritual beliefs intertwine, blurring the boundary between reality and myth. Through its poetic pacing and hauntingly mystical atmosphere, the film further reflects director Chong Keat Aun’s ongoing interest in memory, cultural identity, and communities existing on the margins of modern society.
