Set in Cu Chi in 1967, the film follows a 21-member guerrilla unit led by Bay Theo, who live and fight within the underground tunnel network during one of the most intense periods of the war. Tasked with protecting a group of strategic intelligence operatives hiding in the tunnels, the unit finds itself confronting large-scale search-and-destroy operations conducted by the U.S. military. Amid relentless bombardment, severe shortages, and the constant threat of death, these men and women endure beneath the earth, sustained by camaraderie, resilience, and an unwavering determination to defend their homeland.
Bui Thac Chuyen was born in Hanoi in 1968. Following the success of his short film Night Cyclo Trip, which received an award in the Cinéfondation section at the 2000 Cannes Film Festival, he gained international recognition with his feature debut Living in Fear (2006), which won numerous awards, including Best Film at the Shanghai International Film Festival. He further established his reputation with Adrift (2009) and Glorious Ashes (2022), the latter screening in competition at the Tokyo International Film Festival, winning the Golden Balloon Award at the Festival des 3 Continents in Nantes, and receiving five awards at the 23rd Vietnam Film Festival, including the Golden Lotus Award and Best Director. In 2025, he directed Tunnel: Sun in the Dark, a revolutionary war film that became a major box-office success and received multiple awards at international film festivals.
